Spoken languages are more difficult for deaf people to access than for hearing people. Many deaf children who grow up in hearing environments use home sign and, when applicable, speechreading to better understand their hearing families.
Sign languages, developed over many years by deaf communities, are usually the easiest and most accessible language for communication with the deaf.
Some deaf people also use assistive devices to improve their ability to hear sound. These devices, such as hearing aids and cochlear implants, do not cure deafness. For some people these devices can improve their ability to hear spoken languages. For others, there may be little noticeable improvement and the devices may even cause greater discomfort.
